Spring Break 2010: Noo Yawk and Joisey, part six

On our last day in New Jersey we stayed local and just checked out some old haunts and hung with some old friends.
This was the house where we lived from 1987 until I went away to college. My father sold it when he moved to Virginia in 1997. It shocks me to think that I was last in that house 14 years ago, but there it is.
My mother's ashes are buried in the memorial garden of a church in Wayne, NJ and we stopped and saw the little placque on the wall of the church bearing her name. Again, time flies. She's eight years dead now. Thats one year longer than Jacob Marley, when Dickens said he was "dead as a doornail."
Then on our last evening in NJ, we met up with a bunch of High School friends at the TGI Fridays and swapped war stories. Above, Frances is with Christina, and below, with my ex-girlfriend Debbie.

Spring Break 2010: Noo Yawk and Joisey part five

And now for New Jersey:
After a few days on Staten Island, we went and spent a few days with my best friend from High School and his family, in Parsippany, New Jersey. Jason lives a few blocks from the house where he grew up. Frances was enamoured with his younger son Jacoby, and was especially thrilled by their pet bunny. She liked rubbing her face against it. It was very cute to watch.

Spring Break 2010: Noo Yawk and Joisey, part three

Here's another shot from the Staten Island Ferry.
We went into the city again, and met Franny's godfather Bob at the Central Park Zoo.
This is a picture of us three somewhere in Manhattan, near Central Park.
Franny was a bit shy around her godfather.

Spring Break, 2010: Noo Yawk and Joisey, part four

Here are some more pictures taken around New York City.
Franny got really excited by the tall buildings, she doesn't see much of this in Grand Rapids.
And again. I am trying to remember where this was, because people have asked if this was Times Square, and it wasn't. Frances actually slept through Times Square in her stroller--fancy sleeping through Times Square.
Here we are waiting for the subway. Frances's favorite parts of New York were riding the ferry and the subway, without a doubt. Getting the stroller down all the subway terminals was not always easy, but she really got a kick out of us carrying her stroller down big flights of stairs.

Spring Break 2010: Noo Yawk and Joisey, part 2

We met my friend Jason and his two boys at Times Square, and then we all went to the Children's Museum of Manhattan on the upper east side.

Here is Franny with Jacoby and Jaden, in the Dr. Seus car at the Children's Museum.
Her favorite part of New York is still riding on the ferry and watching all the big buildings go by.

Spring Break 2010: Noo Yawk and Joisey part 1

For Spring Break, we drove out to New York and New Jersey. We have friends on Staten Island who live right near the ferry, and spent three days there before heading to northern New Jersey, where I grew up. I was just tallying up the states where Frances has been since coming home, and we have: MI, IN, IL, WI, OH, KY, WV, VA, NC, PA, NJ and NY...so twelve different states so far, that's not too shabby. Anyway, Frances now knows that though her daddy was born in Kalamazoo, he is "from Jersey."
I took this late afternoon shot of the skyline from the ferry as we were leaving the city.
Even though we took her to zoos and the children's museum, Franny's favorite part of the trip was, without a doubt, riding on the "big orange boat."
That's the Statue of Liberty in the background... Franny can now say "statue"
